MT stands for Machine Translation, now part of the field of AI (Artificial Intelligence), and will continue to transform the translator’s professional image over the next decade.
At ProMosaik Translation, we’ve already met this challenge by offering low-cost machine translations, mostly into English and other popular languages. All machine translations are edited by a human translator of our team (post-editing).

Of course, the result is not as good as the one achieved by a human translation, but it is “good enough” and almost legally watertight, but there might be a few minor blunders in it.
One of the earliest projects of MT in history was a Russian-English translation program for the US Army.
However, despite its poor quality, the program was popular among US military officials, who for the first time gained insight into Russian documents. The “SUSY” system was developed as “electronic language research”, along with the first recognition modules for morphosyntax and semantics.
With the computer turnaround and the disappearance of MS-DOS in the 2000s, more static methods were used. “Google Translate” for instance is a very static translation system launched on the market in 2006 and providing miserable results.
Google itself has a startup in Italy to improve its own bad databases at a local translation agency, similar to Microsoft. As you see, behind all this process, there are still human translators and interpreters like those working at the multicultural translation agency ProMosaik Translation.
From the point of many people, in 2010, the status of MT was unsatisfactory. The deep scientific understanding of the human language remains insufficient. Many translators and linguists erroneously assume that translation without fundamental competences of automated systems is fundamentally limited since “many translations also require large amounts of conceptual knowledge, meta-knowledge, and the general creation of the human environment beyond conventions of social interaction” (WIKI).
This has changed rapidly since 2017. Examples include DeepL or the new Google translate which are now capable of processing larger amounts of data by reaching better results.
In 2018, Microsoft announced that it would achieve Chinese-English translations with the quality of a professional human translator through Artificial Intelligence. This is a breakthrough in machine translation Microsoft had not expected to happen so early.
